Alien Youth When Skillet’s John Cooper sings about “worldwide Jesus domination” on the opening track of Alien Youth, you get the feeling he’s leading a force seldom seen (or heard) before. That’s certainly the case for this fascinating release with few parallels in the Christian music world. Grinding guitars, spacey keyboards, and machine-gun drums are all held together by Cooper’s keen sense of melody. It’s a lead-heavy release with blast-off tracks like “Rippin Me Off,” Skillet’s harsh message for Marilyn Manson, plus “Earth Invasion” and “Kill Me Heal Me.” Yet Skillet softens the sonic blows with kinder and gentler gems like “You Are My Hope,” “Thirst Is Taking Over” and “Will You Be There?” No doubt Cooper and his bandmates have claimed new ground in the name of their Lord. It might be worth catching a ride with this generation of Alien Youth. –Michael Lyttle
Customer Review: Skillet Rocks Hard
A slight departure from their previous albums, Skillet rocks really hard in Alien Youth, with sogs like Kill Me, Heal Me and Earth Invasion but also has some ballads such as You Are My Hope. With the aggressive vocals and heavy guitar riffs Alien Youth is an amazing album.
Customer Review: If Manson was a Christian, it might sound like this.
Skillet singer John Cooper’s “take a mess and turn it into a message” take on Manson’s music works extremely well on Alien Youth. “Vapor” is one of the hardest songs you will hear in Christian music. But thats not all they’re about. The lyrics are the cream filling in this twinkie. Check out the powerful “One Real Thing” where he cries, “I get down on my knees and i… feel your love wash over me.” Cooper sings with an intesity and real emotion that you don’t find in many artists. Skillet can rock it out, but they also give you a couple slow ballads to complete the package. “You are my hope” is a beautiful song that’s easy to sing along with. If you like Alien Youth, don’t hesitate to pick up Collide, which will blow you away.
